It’s now the day after the deadliest take-down of Jews in the United States, in recent history. Domestic terrorism is no longer restricted to Israel and other nations. It is here, it is real, and it is something that we all have to deal with.
Anti-semitism is a product of hate and ignorance. I don’t have to tell you this – it’s something that we know. In our own lives, we know that when we hate someone, or deny someone their rights, or even decide not to say hello to them at school, it’s a symptom of religious intolerance and in some cases racism. We are all guilty of it to some extent.
However, we are now living in a time where everyone has a voice. We say things on Facebook, on Twitter, and on other social media platforms that we often wish we never said. That’s why G-d invented the EDIT and DELETE button. Words have meaning. Words are powerful. Words can elevate our feelings and then bring us down.
In the case of the shooter, he had been writing his insanities over a platform called GAB. It’s home to one political and social view, and he found his audience on that platform. Unfortunately, even with the obvious tone of his postings that wished death to Jews, he was able to hold a license to own guns, and he lived in a state that enabled the purchase of semi-automatic weapons.
It’s important to know that people are being radicalized over social media, and it is pushing people over the edge.
These crimes of hate do not happen in a vacuum. They happen in our own communities, and they are done by people who advertise their hate. We have to be aware of it, and we have to make sure that we are not infected by the hateful words of others. Poison is spread on television, out of the mouths of politicians, and in the dark corners of the Internet.
Be aware of it, and avoid it. Check back with The Dreidel for more conversation. If you care to write about it, please do! Send an email to email@example.com and share your thoughts. We will not publish your name.
